RADON... Dangerous for non-smokers and more dangerous for smokers!

RADON???  The short answer.

Radon is a radioactive gas that is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It is formed by the natural breakdown of uranium in soils and rocks.  When radon escapes from the ground into the outdoor air, it is diluted to low concentrations and is not a concern. However, radon that enters an enclosed space, such as a home, can sometimes accumulate to high levels.  On average, 10% of lung cancers are attributable to radon exposure worldwide. In 2006, an estimated 1900 lung cancer deaths in Canada were due to radon exposure.

The only way to find out if your home has a radon problem is to measure the radon concentration inside it.  Click here to see the test kits available.

We recommend purchasing both the short term and the long term Radon Test Kit for the following reasons.  Since our test kits are like a "picture in time" the long term test which measures the Radon level in your home from 3-12 months is superior because of the long period of time that the test takes place for and Radon levels do fluxuate.  Thus, the long test gives you a greater amount of time to average your Radon levels.  That being said,  if you are presently living in a residence that has high Radon levels would you really want to wait 3-12 months to find out?  This is one value of our short term tests.  Our short term tests sample your Radon levels for 48-96 hours and then you can get your lab results within approximately 2 weeks.  If the levels of Radon come back high then you will no doubt want to take immediate action to mitigate the problem.  If the short term test results show that the levels of Radon are were low then we reccomend using the more accurate long term Radon Test Kit since the levels may fluxuate through the coming months to levels that are unacceptable.

The short term Radon Test Kit is also perfect for a test that is needed quickly where a house is being sold or bought.

Radon Mitigation is best carried out by a certified mitigation contractor.  Unfortunately in Canada there are very few individuals.  At Utest we try to provide some basic helpful information and a couple basic kits that may help the DIY to mitigate higher Radon levels.
